2. What Are Cookies & Local Storage?
Cookies are small text files that websites store on your computer or mobile device when you visit them. They allow web applications to recognize your browser, remember session logins, store preferences, and safeguard user security.
In addition to cookies, modern web applications like NihonTale utilize Browser LocalStorage. LocalStorage allows key-value data to be saved directly inside your browser to remember visual novel story unlock states, audio volume levels, and Japanese vocabulary quiz progress without sending unnecessary network requests.
3. Cookie Categories Used on NihonTale
At present, NihonTale uses technically necessary storage only. No analytics service, no advertising network and no third-party tracker is embedded in this Platform — there is no Google Analytics, no Matomo, no advertising pixel and no external script of any kind. Every file the site loads is served from our own server.
A. Technically Necessary Storage (Always Active)
These cookies and local storage items are essential for the operation, technical stability, and security of NihonTale. Pursuant to ยง 25(2) No. 2 TTDSG / TDDDG and Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR, they do not require user consent because the service requested by the user cannot function without them.
- Session Token (PHPSESSID): Maintains your active user login session securely. Sent with the
HttpOnlyandSameSite=Laxattributes, and withSecurewhenever the connection is encrypted. - CSRF Security Token: Stored in your session and required by every request that changes data, so an action cannot be triggered on your behalf by another website.
- Consent Preference State (nihontale_cookie_consent): Stores your choice regarding cookie categories.
- Visual Novel Game State (LocalStorage): Stores current episode progress and unlocked Tokyo locations.
B. Analytics & Statistics (Optional) — not currently in use
The preference toggle for this category is offered so that your choice is already on record, but nothing is currently collected under it. Should we introduce analytics in future, it would run only after you switch this category on, and this section would be updated to name the service and what it measures before that happens.
C. Marketing & Advertising (Optional) — not currently in use
No advertising or campaign-measurement technology is embedded in the Platform. NihonTale does NOT sell or trade your data to third-party ad brokers.
4. Local Browser Storage Usage
NihonTale makes extensive use of HTML5 Web Storage (`localStorage`) to provide a seamless visual novel gaming experience:
nihontale_sound_volume: Remembers your preferred background music and speech audio volume settings.nihontale_unlocked_scenes: Keeps track of unlocked Tokyo districts (e.g. Shibuya, Shinjuku, Bunkyo) for offline and instant resumption.nihontale_ui_theme: Saves your preferred visual theme settings.
