Step into the streets of Tokyo and learn by playing. Story scenes, hiragana and katakana, kanji and grammar practice — with Coach Yui explaining each new word where it comes up.
In Story Mode you travel through Tokyo and run into the situations that actually come up: ordering in a restaurant, asking for directions, paying at a counter, making small talk on the train.
Coach Yui travels with you. She explains the grammar and the vocabulary inside the scene, right where you need them — so a new particle arrives attached to a sentence you have just heard, instead of as an entry on a list.
The city opens up district by district. Every neighborhood holds its own places — busy train stations, quiet shrines, an arcade floor, an izakaya after dark — and each one brings the words that belong to it.
New districts and locations keep being added, so the map grows while you work your way through it. Wherever you arrive, Coach Yui is there with the Japanese you need for that particular place.
Answer out loud. Your microphone picks up the sentence and checks it against the expected reading, so you practice saying the words instead of only recognizing them.
Assemble the sentence from word tiles. Word order and the particles that hold it together (は, を, で, に) are the whole exercise — you can see every piece, but they only fit one way.
Type the answer from memory in hiragana, katakana or romaji. Nothing to pick from and nothing to recognize — the hardest of the three, and the one that sticks.
| Feature | Traditional Apps | NihonTale |
|---|---|---|
| Where words come from | A list, with no situation attached. | A story scene in Tokyo, where the word is the one you need. |
| How you answer | Tap the right box out of four. | Say it, build it, or type it from memory. |
| Kanji study | A character and its meaning, nothing around it. | Each kanji next to its compounds and lookalikes, with audio. |
| Looking things up | You leave the app for a dictionary. | A built-in dictionary for words and particles, in the same panel. |
| Your mistakes | Back into the pile, same as everything else. | Collected into a mistakes list you can drill on its own. |
| Staying with it | A badge for opening the app. | A daily goal and a streak that only count real reviews. |
Hiragana and katakana in full, as interactive charts and flashcards. Start from zero and get tested in both directions — character to sound and sound to character — until the kana read themselves.
Everyday Japanese vocabulary, starting from the JLPT N5 core and sorted by topic — essentials, food, travel — and by word class. Practice in both directions, and let the words you keep missing collect into a list of their own.
Every kanji with its readings and meanings, beginning with the JLPT N5 set. Each character is shown next to its compounds and next to the ones it is easiest to mix up. Tap one to hear it read aloud.
Sentence patterns and the particles that hold them together. Build each sentence from tiles, say it out loud or type it out — whichever way you pick, Coach Yui explains the rule behind it.
Look up a word or a particle without leaving the scene you are in. The dictionary sits in the same panel and filters as you type, so a quick check costs you nothing.
See what is due today, how far each mode has come, and which words keep tripping you up. The streak only counts days you actually studied, so it means something when it grows.
Create an account and Coach Yui will walk you through your first scene today. Kana is free forever, and the story starts right away.
